Spring, 2020: in a matter of hours, I had to transition from full-time in-person music teaching to being locked down at home. Teachers were given several weeks to figure out how to teach remotely. I created a series of video lessons from the "Music Den" (my living room). That meant learning how to record and mix both video and audio tracks. The following school year saw me laid off and taking temporary remote teaching jobs, giving me much more time to explore home recording technology. At first, I recorded tracks in my garage, but eventually converted a spare bedroom into an office and recording studio. Garage Gospel is my ongoing project of turning my trumpet into a brass ensemble, playing my own arrangements of classic soul, R&B, and gospel songs, sometimes sweetened with keyboard and a drum track. Retiring from the classroom in 2026 has given me more time and space to re-record some of these tracks--and to add new ones.
