One of my brothers sent me a musical transcription of the songs of humpback whales to see what I could do with it. After playing it on my trumpet, I realized it reminded me of one of my favorite orchestral pieces: "The Unanswered Question," by Charles Ives. I arranged the string parts for brass, and substituted the whale song part for the wind parts in Ives's original.
